MAC-USP Launches Long-Term Drawing Exhibition Memorial do Desenho

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC-USP) in São Paulo opened Memorial do Desenho, a long-term exhibition running until June 2020. Curated by Carmen Aranha, the show presents a significant selection from the museum's drawing collection, focusing on works on paper which constitute about 70% of its over 10,000-piece holdings. The exhibition traces the trajectory of paper-based works from the early 20th century to recently acquired contemporary pieces, highlighting technical innovations and the incorporation of unconventional materials like suitcases, wood, canvas, and acrylic. Alongside the museum's collection, works by five artists—Scottish artist Donald Urquhardt, US-based multimedia artist John Parker, and Brazilians Vitor Mizael, Rosana Paulino, and Rodrigo Munhoz—offer a contemporary perspective. Aranha described drawing as the progenitor of other artistic languages and a visualization of thought, citing Joseph Beuys's concept of invisible tensions becoming visible. The exhibition is located at Av. Pedro Álvares Cabral, 1301, Ibirapuera, São Paulo, with free admission from June 29, 2019, to June 28, 2020.
