Maarten Baas imagines design in 2216 with New! Newer! Newest! at Salone del Mobile

exhibition · 2026-05-05

For the 2016 Salone del Mobile, Dutch designer Maarten Baas presents New! Newer! Newest!, a show set in the year 2216. The exhibition, held at Via Savona 33 in collaboration with the Groninger Museum, critiques the empty use of the word "new" in design discourse. Two projects are featured: NEW Forest, which envisions 100 hectares of an artificial Dutch island, Flevoland, planted with trees whose foliage will spell out "New" by 2216; and The Tree Trunk Chair, a chair that takes 200 years to grow by pressing a mold against a tree. Baas's visionary approach counters what curator Nicole Uniquole calls the decline of Dutch conceptual design, offering an antidote to the monotony of craft-centric discussions.
