Ma Rainey's Black Bottom: Viola Davis stars in August Wilson adaptation on Netflix

publication · 2026-04-27

Set in a sweltering Chicago summer of 1927, the film Ma Rainey's Black Bottom follows the legendary blues singer Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) as she arrives at a recording studio with her band. The band members—Cutler, Slow Drag, Toledo, and Levee—fill the waiting time with stories and music, revealing their personal histories of suffering and hope. Levee, the youngest and most restless, dreams of leading his own band and clashes with the older musicians. When Ma finally arrives, tensions escalate as her manager struggles to placate both her demands and the studio owner. Directed by George C. Wolfe and written by Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the film is based on August Wilson's 1984 play, which was his first Broadway production. It premiered on Netflix on December 18, 2020. The story uses the recording session as a lens to explore social injustice and power dynamics faced by African Americans. Viola Davis delivers a monumental performance as Ma Rainey, who uses her capricious demands to assert her dignity against her white agent. The film also features Chadwick Boseman in his final role as Levee, a trumpeter haunted by a traumatic past. Boseman's performance is widely praised, with his character's arc culminating in a devastating climax. August Wilson, who died in 2005, wrote ten plays chronicling the African American experience in the 20th century, winning a Pulitzer Prize. The Washington Post noted that his death left an enormous wound in American theater.
