M9 Museum in Mestre Calls Citizens to Become Part of Permanent Multimedia Installation

The M9 museum in Mestre, a €110 million cultural-commercial-real estate project by Fondazione di Venezia, is inviting citizens aged 0 to 100 to participate in an open call for its permanent multimedia installation 'M9 sono io'. The installation will select 120 people to represent the 'typical Italian' through photographic portraits, contributing to a section on demographic transformations in 20th-century Italy. Participants must submit personal data by January 20, with photo shoots from February 28 to March 9. As of six days into the call, 203 applications have been received. The museum, housed in a former Benedictine convent and military district, spans 10,000 square meters and includes an Innovation Retail Center. The permanent exhibition features eight sections, including group portraits corresponding to census years 1901, 1961, and 2011. The project draws on precedents like Gillian Wearing's 'The Family Monument' (2008) in Trento, which selected the Giuliani family, and Oliviero Toscani's 'Razza Umana', a broader anthropological study. M9's opening is scheduled for late 2018.
