M24 Musée du Sport Automobile Opens After Major Renovation Ahead of 24 Hours of Le Mans

architecture-design · 2026-05-27

The M24 Musée du Sport Automobile in Le Mans has reopened after a radical transformation led by local architect Frédéric Audevard. Originally a hangar-like space for racing professionals and enthusiasts, the museum now spans 8,600 square meters and presents the history of motorsports through legendary cars (including the 1928 Tracta Gephi and the 1971 Porsche 917 LH), human-scale dioramas, historical walks, and abstract frescoes reminiscent of Pierre Soulages. Audevard remodeled the original 1960s museum and added a new extension whose design subtly references vehicle spoilers, diffusers, and headlights. The renovation was completed in under a year to ensure the opening coincides with the 24 Hours of Le Mans, scheduled for June 10–14, 2026. Scenography was handled by Raphaël Daguet of Nantes-based firm The Immersers, who described the museum as 'the most theatrical museum of motor sports' and aimed to create 'time capsules' evoking drivers, teams, and fans. The museum is located at Place Luigi Chinetti, 72019 Le Mans.
