M+ Museum to Open in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District by 2021
The M+ museum in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District, designed by Herzog & de Meuron with local partners TFP Farrells and Arup, is set to open by 2021 after construction completion. Architect Jacques Herzog called it "the main museum of visual culture in Asia" and said it "best expresses where we should go in world culture." The 65,000-square-meter complex includes 17,000 square meters of exhibition space across 33 galleries, plus a cinema, media library, learning center, research center, retail, restaurants, a rooftop garden with Victoria Harbour views, offices, and storage. Its ceramic tile cladding reflects changing light and weather, while a large LED lighting system on the tower facade will display museum content. M+ focuses on 20th- and 21st-century visual arts, moving images, design, and architecture, emphasizing diversity, equality, and access locally and globally. It follows the Tai Kwun – Centre for Heritage and Arts, also by Herzog & de Meuron, which repurposed the former Central Police Station. The museum aims to become Asia's leading visual culture institution amid Hong Kong's evolving social and political context.
