M+ Museum Opens in Hong Kong with 50,000-Work Collection and Censorship Questions
After more than ten years of planning, Hong Kong's M+ Museum of Visual Culture has officially opened, aspiring to become Asia's counterpart to prominent Western cultural institutions. The neobrutalist design, crafted by Herzog & de Meuron, houses an impressive collection of 50,000 artworks from 777 artists, with 76% originating from Asia. Among the six opening exhibitions are The M+ Sigg Collection, which highlights postwar Chinese art, and Hong Kong: Here and Beyond, showcasing 136 local talents. Concerns regarding Hong Kong's National Security Law led to the removal of Ai Weiwei's work, as stated by Chairman Henry Tang, who stressed adherence to local regulations. Other featured works include Antony Gormley's Asian Field and Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries's Crucified TVS, with the museum focused on presenting contemporary art history through Asian viewpoints.
