M+ Museum in Hong Kong Delayed to 2019, Pre-Opening in September
M+, the museum for 20th- and 21st-century culture in Hong Kong, will open in 2019, two years later than initially planned. Construction, which began 18 months ago, is set to finish in two years. A pre-opening pavilion designed by Hong Kong architects Vincent Pang, Tynnon Chow, and Lisa Cheung will launch in autumn 2016. In September, a solo exhibition of Tsang Kin-Wah opens, followed by a design show from November to January 2017. The museum, located in the West Kowloon Cultural District, is designed by Herzog & de Meuron and will span 60,000 square meters, making it the largest institution of its kind globally. Excavation work around the Airport Express tunnel has resumed. The total budget is around HKD 2 billion, including an acquisition campaign that has already purchased works by Danh Vo, Alfredo Jaar, Yoko Ono, and Tiffany Chung (acquired at Art Basel HK). The museum is again searching for a director after Swedish curator Lars Nittve resigned last year, citing delays that have plagued the project since 2013.
