M+ Hong Kong's Picasso Exhibition Sparks Debate Over Western Canon and Asian Representation

M+ in Hong Kong is showcasing 'Picasso for Asia – A Conversation,' which features over 60 works by Picasso from the Musée National Picasso-Paris alongside pieces from 30 Asian artists, and will be on display until 13 July 2025. The exhibition is divided into sections titled The Genius, The Outsider, The Magician, and The Apprentice. Critics have pointed out that it emphasizes Picasso's legacy while failing to adequately confront his abusive behavior towards women. Notable works include Zeng Fanzhi's 2011 painting and Nalini Malani's 2023 video, accompanied by mild descriptions of Picasso as 'at times abusive.' Isamu Noguchi's sculptures and Simon Fujiwara's 2024 painting are also featured, though some attendees find them lacking. The show wraps up with Yasumasa Morimura's 2010 print, raising concerns about the comparison between a single Western artist and numerous Asian creators.
