M+ Hong Kong Forges Global Partnerships and Expands Programming Under Raffel and Chong

institutional · 2026-04-20

M+ in Hong Kong, led by director Suhanya Raffel and chief curator Doryun Chong, has secured over 20 international collaboration agreements, including a recent partnership with New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) focusing on loans, exhibition exchanges, and curatorial and conservation research. In March, they launched 'Picasso for Asia,' a collaborative exhibition with Musée Picasso-Paris that juxtaposes works by Pablo Picasso with those of Asian and Asian-diasporic artists from the past century, featuring Lee Mingwei's 'Guernica in Sand' (2006–), a performance piece that recreates and erases Picasso's 'Guernica' (1937). Chong also traveled to Tokyo for 'Prism of the Real: Making Art in Japan 1989–2010,' organized with the National Art Center, Tokyo. The museum's programming has attracted younger audiences, with Trevor Yeung's 'Courtyard of Attachments'—a restaged installation of empty fishtanks originally commissioned for the 2024 Venice Biennale—drawing nearly half of visitors aged 25–34. Additionally, M+'s exhibition on I.M. Pei has toured to Shanghai and Doha, expanding its global reach. These initiatives highlight M+'s rapid growth and strategic focus on cross-cultural dialogues and audience engagement since its opening four years ago.
