Lynn Chadwick's 'Geometry of Fear' Takes Over Houghton Hall

exhibition · 2026-05-05

A major UK exhibition at Houghton Hall reconsiders Lynn Chadwick (1914–2003), the postwar British sculptor known for jagged, angular figures. Chadwick, who began as an architectural draughtsman, constructs his sculptures from frameworks rather than modeling them. He rose to prominence after winning the International Prize for Sculpture at the 1956 Venice Biennale, beating Alberto Giacometti. Despite this, he is often overshadowed by Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. The exhibition, curated by Pangolin London, brings together over thirty works spanning four decades, placed across the house and grounds of the neo-Palladian estate. Chadwick's sculptures—angular bronze figures and beasts—create a tension with the classical architecture and controlled landscape. Notable works include 'Ace of Diamonds III' (1986–96), his final piece, a rotating stainless steel sculpture on the west lawn, and 'Sitting Couple on Bench' (1990), an oversized origami-like couple. The show also features early kinetic works made from balsa wood and aluminium wire. Chadwick belongs to the 'Geometry of Fear' generation, shaped by WWII and Cold War anxieties. Houghton Hall has hosted major contemporary exhibitions by James Turrell, Sean Scully, and Stephen Cox. The exhibition runs from 2 May to 4 October 2026.
