Lyle Ashton Harris to Debut 'On Oracle' Performance at Aspen Art Museum

Lyle Ashton Harris is set to take the stage on July 29, 2026, at the Aspen Art Museum's rooftop as part of the second edition of the AIR festival. He’ll be reviving his 2020 piece 'Oracle' from the 'Shadow Works' series, showcasing kente fabrics, photographic prints, and other materials. This performance, which he calls a 'performative montage,' will feature visuals and spoken-word elements, touching on personal and political themes, and will include collaborations with writer Darnell L. Moore and artist Raymond Pinto. Earlier this year, Aspen hosted a special exhibition of 'Shadow Works.' Harris, known for his studios in New York, was referred to by photographer Ryan McGinley as ‘the living godfather of gender, race, and sexuality.’ In a CULTURED interview, he shared insights about his creative routine, which includes listening to classical music, Aretha Franklin, and audiobooks, while also tuning into KUSC radio. He considers Allan Sekula's 'Photography Against the Grain' a pivotal read, famously remarking, 'Process is a bitch.'
