Lydia Gifford's 'I Am Vertical' Exhibition at Centre International d'Art et du Paysage

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From 20 March to 12 June 2016, British artist Lydia Gifford showcased her solo exhibition 'I Am Vertical' at the Centre International d'Art et du Paysage on Île de Vassivière. This exhibition included abstract sculptures and paper works that interacted with the architecture of the venue, which was designed by Aldo Rossi and Xavier Fabre in 1991. Featured were six grey paper pulp sculptures named 'Peel 1–7', around twenty 'Siphons', and six white sculptures mounted on steel rods. Organic forms were crafted from materials such as cardboard and oil paint. The title alludes to Sylvia Plath's poem from 1961. The exhibition received a review in the May 2016 issue of ArtReview, with the Centre's lakeside setting providing historical significance.
