Luz Lizarazo's Cicatrices exhibition at Museo La Tertulia explores nature, mythology, and the female body
Colombian artist Luz Lizarazo presents her first institutional exhibition at Museo La Tertulia in Cali, running from 14 July to 29 November. The survey showcases recent works exploring intersections between nature, mythology, and the female body. Universo (2021), a towering column of sewn mosquito nets embroidered with floral imagery, dominates one gallery space with living plants at its base. While sculptural works like Estómago (2005) and Piel (2017) reference artists Ernesto Neto and Eva Hesse, Lizarazo's most distinctive contributions appear in her pictorial works. Alucinaciones (2018) features black-and-white linocut prints on satin where women merge with flora and fauna, creating hybrid entities. Mundo Intermedio (2019) draws from precolonial Colombian mythology, with paintings like Nascimento (2019) depicting a naked woman projecting light from her vulva while encircled by a giant snake. Recuerdo de Infancia (2021) continues themes of creation with a naked woman standing over a prone man as a giant rose looms above. The artist presents these mythological scenes as self-portraits rather than anthropological studies, connecting her own womanhood to cosmic origins.
