LURT 2020 workshop transforms mafia-confiscated building in Riesi into community center

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Between August 22 and 30, 2020, the Laboratorio Umano di Rigenerazione Territoriale (LURT) workshop took place in Riesi, Sicily. This initiative, organized by Servizio Cristiano and spearheaded by Orizzontale+Flora La Sita, was coordinated by Emanuele Piccardo/plug_in. The goal was to reclaim a building previously confiscated from the mafia, repurposing its ground floor into a youth orientation center for individuals aged 18 to 30. Participants resided at the Monte degli Ulivi village, which was designed by architect Leonardo Ricci in the early 1960s for pastor Tullio Vinay. The project, titled Civico Civico, successfully converted part of the building into a community center within eight days, involving twenty students. Additional sessions are scheduled for 2021 (first floor) and 2022 (second floor).
