Lumen Wins MoMA PS1 YAP 2017

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

The 18th edition of the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program (YAP) has been awarded to Lumen, a site-specific installation by New York-based studio Lumen. The project will occupy the museum's courtyard from June 29, 2017, offering shade, seating, and cooling through a lightweight structure made of hexagonal elements covered with photoluminescent fabric. Suspended cones will release a fine mist when visitors approach, creating a haze. The winning studio, known for merging architecture with biology and mathematics, beat finalists Ania Jaworska (Chicago), Bureau Spectacular (Los Angeles), Office of III (New York), and SCHAUM/SHIEH (New York). Sean Anderson, Associate Curator of MoMA's Architecture and Design Department, praised the design as a "critical fusion of technology and nature." Meanwhile, the Italian edition of YAP, previously hosted at MAXXI in Rome with interventions by Studio Corte (2015) and Parasite 2.0 (2016), has been suspended for 2017 and will resume as a biennial event in 2018.
