Luke Willis Thompson Wins 2018 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize for Collaborative Film

award · 2026-04-20

Luke Willis Thompson received the 2018 Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize for his powerful film featuring Diamond Reynolds, who saw her partner, Philando Castile, shot by police in Minnesota in 2016. His piece, Autoportrait (2017), was created alongside Reynolds, responding to the media footage she recorded immediately after the incident. The film debuted at the Chisenhale Gallery in London. Out of four finalists, Thompson was awarded £30,000. Brett Rogers, director of The Photographer's Gallery, emphasized how the project empowers its subject and sparks conversations about image ownership. Additionally, Thompson is also up for the 2018 Turner Prize, with the winner to be announced in December. Other nominees included Mathieu Asselin, Rafal Milach, and Batia Suter, with a jury comprising Anne-Marie Beckmann, Duncan Forbes, Gordon MacDonald, and Penelope Umbrico. All shortlisted works will be on display at The Photographers' Gallery until June 3.
