Luke Fowler's Major Survey Exhibition at Serpentine Gallery in May 2009

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Luke Fowler, born in 1978 and based in Glasgow, will have his first major survey exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery in May 2009. He won the inaugural Film London/More 4 Jarman Award in 2008, a collaboration with the Serpentine. Fowler's work, first seen at Manifesta 4 in 2002 with his film 'What You See Is Where You're At' (2001), profiles renegade psychotherapist R.D. Laing and critiques oppressive psychiatry through documentary collage. His films, like 'Pilgrimage from Scattered Points' (2005) which portrays composer Cornelius Cardew, layer archive footage, photographs, sound, and interviews to challenge documentary conventions and explore multiple truths rather than a single objective narrative. Influenced by Jean Rouch, Fowler questions organization in art, emphasizing self-organization and the fluidity of history. As a musician and record label owner, his collaborative practice spans roles as artist, musician, historian, filmmaker, and curator. His work reflects on time, memory, and the negotiation of past, present, and future, suggesting that phenomena evolve variably and plurally over time.
