Luis Gomez de Teran on Painting, Street Art, and His Solo Show at Galleria Varsi
Venezuelan-born artist Luis Gomez de Teran (aka Gomez, b. 1980, Caracas; lives in Rome) presents his first solo exhibition 'Nox Omnibus Lucet' at Galleria Varsi in Rome, running until July 14, 2016. The show explores time, adolescence, maturity, and human fragility through paintings on canvas and unconventional materials. Gomez, largely self-taught, began his artistic journey with graffiti, which he describes as the most spontaneous language of his youth. He views the entire school system as poorly structured and expresses gratitude for the non-academic paths that shaped him. His creative process is extemporaneous, inspired by the chaos of the world. For his murals, he collaborates with poets and writers, such as Maurizio Mequio for a street poetry festival in Rome's Trullo district. At the former psychiatric hospital Santa Maria della Pietà, he wrote his own text after connecting with patients. He sees painting as a timeless medium for human stories, countering the digital age's tendency toward perfection. The exhibition title means 'the night shines for everyone,' reflecting his belief that night reveals beauty and truth.
