Luis Gómez Armenteros' dual exhibition 'Comanche' opens in Milan and Bergamo

Cuban artist Luis Gómez Armenteros (born 1968, Havana) presents 'Comanche (The enemy of everyone)', a dual exhibition opening February 18 at Fabbrica del Vapore in Milan and February 22 at The Place in Bergamo. Curated by Giacomo Zaza, the show features installation and site-specific works exploring the role of art and artists in contemporary society, the art world's actors, and consumption patterns. The project includes a brief residency in February. Armenteros explains that 'Comanche' references the Ute word meaning 'anyone who wants to fight with me all the time' (Powell 2014), also signifying 'people', and reflects the transculturation of the Comanche people due to encounters with Western culture—a condition he identifies with as a mestizo. Zaza describes Armenteros' work as marked by awareness of rules based on economic and social speculation rather than ethics, leading to a sharp, ironic gaze that offers parallel observation of the world, sometimes expressed as tragicomic, bitter, and ironic denunciation, as in the video work 'Sparring Partner', which critiques artistic practices that serve vanity over commitment and research.
