Luis Camnitzer petitions Trump to replace border wall with Christo's Running Fence

Uruguayan-born artist Luis Camnitzer has launched a humorous petition on Change.org urging U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to commission artist Christo to create a new version of his 1976 land art piece Running Fence instead of building a border wall with Mexico. Camnitzer cites the 'great success' of the original work, which consisted of white nylon fabric suspended between steel poles across two counties in Southern California. He argues that extending the 24.5-mile-long installation to full border length would transform what he calls a 'racist project' into a public art event and improve the U.S. image with cultural appeal. The petition has already garnered over 700 signatures, surprising Camnitzer given the limited response to his previous satirical efforts. One earlier petition calling for Pope Francis to canonize Disney character Scrooge McDuck received fewer than ten supporters. Camnitzer discussed the initiative with Artnet, noting its unexpected popularity compared to his past campaigns.
