Luigi Spina's Pompeii interiors exhibition at Castel Sant'Angelo
Photographer Luigi Spina (born 1966 in Santa Maria Capua Vetere) presents 'Interno Pompeiano' at Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, an exhibition derived from his book of the same name published by 5 Continents Editions. During the pandemic closure, Spina photographed over 120 domus in Pompeii, capturing interiors using only natural light. For the show, he selected 60 large-format color prints on fine art paper. The images go beyond archaeological documentation to evoke daily life, featuring popinae, rich domus, fountains, mosaics, frescoes, and wall decorations. Massimo Osanna, former director of the Pompeii archaeological site, notes that Pompeii's history extends back to the 7th century BCE and Etruscan origins, long before the 79 CE eruption. Notable houses include the Casa del frutteto with garden paintings including a fig tree and snake symbolizing prosperity, and the Casa della Caccia antica with mythological panels of Apollo and a nymph, and Diana and Actaeon.
