Luigi Presicce's Tableau Vivant in Mexico City
Luigi Presicce recounts his 2018 performance "Il fazzoletto della vera icona" at the Museo de Arte Popular in Mexico City. The work reenacts the Veronica Veil episode from the Via Crucis, where Jesus falls and Veronica wipes his face, receiving his image on a cloth. Presicce altered the staging two days before, repositioning the audience, requiring actors to use phones, and casting Angie, a transgender woman, as the Virgin Mary. He played Christ on a motorcycle, while Matteo Coluccia played Veronica. The performance was produced by Eduardo Secci Gallery, which was exhibiting at Zona Maco. Presicce was inspired by a real arrest he witnessed days earlier. The tableau lasted two hours, with actors in a state of grace. The piece is part of ArtsLife's "Un'opera a settimana" series, where artists discuss a single work.
