Luigi Ontani Unveils Mythological Fountain in Hometown Vergato

artist · 2026-05-04

Luigi Ontani, born in Vergato on November 24, 1943, and trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, has gifted his hometown a new public fountain titled RenVergatellAppenninMontovolo. The marble and bronze work, inaugurated in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, draws on classical mythology: the Faun represents the Reno River, Cupid Amor d’Arte the Vergatello stream, and the Triton the Apennine mountains. The giant figure rests on an egg alluding to Montovolo, encircled by the Ouroboros serpent. Ontani, who has exhibited at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Serpentine Gallery in London, maintains a strong connection to Vergato, where he lives with his sister Tullia in the Villino RomAmor, a habitable artwork that serves as a three-dimensional monograph of his career and personal memories. The fountain was unveiled in a ceremony attended by the artist.
