Luigi Ontani Retrospective at Accademia di San Luca
The Accademia Nazionale di San Luca in Rome is hosting a retrospective for Luigi Ontani (born 1943 in Vergato), coinciding with his receipt of the Premio Presidente della Repubblica for 2015, Italy's highest academic art honor. Established in 1950 by Luigi Einaudi, the award rotates among painting, sculpture, and architecture. Ontani, a provocateur and innovator, has worked across photography, painting, sculpture, and performance, using his body to explore human nature. The exhibition, curated by Ontani himself and titled "SanLuCastoMalinIconicoAttoniTonicoEstaEstE?tico," features 60 works across three spaces at Palazzo Carpegna. It spans from his early tableaux vivants to material experiments from the 1980s and 1990s, and recent ceramic sculptures like ErmEstEtiche, Canopi, and BellimBusTi, which blend sacred and profane. According to Ester Coen's catalogue essay, Ontani's repertoire draws on Italian art and costume history. The show runs from May 17 to September 22, 2017.
