Luigi Moretti's mysterious hotel project hidden in Rome's Palazzo Ripetta

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

In the late 1960s, architect Luigi Moretti transformed Palazzo Ripetta, a 17th-century structure in Rome, into a luxury hotel. This building was originally established for orphaned girls during the papacy of Clement X and later functioned as a boarding school managed by the Suore di San Dorotea until the 1950s. The Ginobbi family purchased it in the mid-1960s, and Moretti completed the conversion into a 69-apartment residence in 1968. Following a two-year renovation that concluded in late 2022, carried out by studio Gaetani and MOI architetture, the hotel now boasts 78 rooms and suites, a restaurant named San Baylon, and a cocktail bar created by Roberto Liorni, with pastry supervision by Giuseppe Solfrizzi and executive chef Marco Ciccottelli.
