Luigi Ghirri's 'Situations' Explored in artpress Dossier and Video

publication · 2026-04-23

The April 2019 issue of artpress (no. 465) features a dossier on Luigi Ghirri, a pivotal but underrecognized figure in Italian photography from the 1970s and 1980s. In conjunction, the Jeu de Paume's online magazine produced a filmed conversation about the photographer, in partnership with artpress. The video, hosted on the Jeu de Paume website, includes discussions with historians Larisa Dryansky and Giuliano Sergio, as well as artist Constance Nouvel, moderated by Étienne Hatt. The conversation was held at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, coinciding with the exhibition 'Luigi Ghirri: Cartes et territoires' running from February 12 to June 2, 2019. Ghirri, who worked as a photographer, writer, editor, and curator, proposed a 'thinking in images' approach. Nearly thirty years after his death, his work continues to question our world and influence contemporary creation.
