Luftwerk's Light Installation Illuminates Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House

exhibition · 2026-05-04

The artist duo Luftwerk, consisting of Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, created a light installation titled 'Geometry of Light' at the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The installation coincided with the opening of the Chicago Architecture Biennial and used red light projections to highlight the structural elements of the house and its surrounding landscape. It was developed in collaboration with architect Iker Gil and sound designer Oriol Tarrago. This followed a similar installation at the Barcelona Pavilion earlier in 2019, marking the 50th anniversary of Mies van der Rohe's death. The work aimed to reveal the 'lost history' of the site and encourage reflection on the house's compositional features.
