Ludovica Carbotta's first Italian retrospective at MAMbo Bologna

exhibition · 2026-04-26

MAMbo's Sala delle Ciminiere in Bologna hosts the first Italian retrospective of Ludovica Carbotta (Turin, 1982; lives in Barcelona), curated by Lorenzo Balbi with Sabrina Samorì. Supported by the Italian Council (Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea, Ministero della Cultura), the show surveys her multidisciplinary practice exploring the relationship between space and its inhabitants. Carbotta's unconventional urban investigations include 'Invisibile Modulor,' a performance where she walked barefoot through her neighborhood and transferred the dirt to fabric. 'Il viaggio è andato a meraviglia, esercizio uno' attempts to merge with the landscape, while 'Non definire la superficie' tries to cross the city without casting a shadow. The exhibition features sculpture series 'Paphos' and 'Die Telamonen,' the latter using varied sculptural methods to create a family of objects with distinct psychologies, embodying fictional site-specificity. 'Monowe' (2016–ongoing) is a film set in a courtroom in an imaginary city inhabited by one person, exploring isolation and multiple perspectives. 'Plenum' presents a fictional future archaeology based on excavation reports of the synagogue at Ostia Antica. The show closes with works using casting techniques, including 'Solid Void,' a stop-motion video altering a topographic map of Turin by collapsing building cutouts into a sealed, impassable space.
