Lucy Liu's 'Hard Feelings' Exhibition at Alisan Fine Arts

Lucy Liu's exhibition 'Hard Feelings' at Alisan Fine Arts in New York, running through June 6th, presents her most personal work to date, centered on the ongoing 'what was' series begun in 2017 after her father Tom Liu's death. The paintings reinterpret family photographs, layering and obscuring images to evoke emotion over documentation. Liu, known as an actress, painter, sculptor, and collagist, describes the work as her most honest. The show features earlier pieces with loose brushstrokes and recent works with sharper outlines of her parents. In an interview, Liu discusses how moving between disciplines gives her freedom, the need for time and quiet before painting, and how making art transforms memory with compassion. She is preparing new works for a solo institutional show.
