Lucy Lippard's Numbers Shows 1969-74: A Photographic Survey
Afterall's Exhibition Histories series documents Lucy Lippard's 'Numbers Shows' from 1969 to 1974 through a photographic essay. The series captures installations across multiple venues, including the Seattle gallery where Rosemarie Castoro's 'Seattle Cracking' (1969) bisected walls with aluminium tape. In an adjacent room, works by Castoro, Robert Huot, Daniel Buren, Harold Hurrell, Dennis Oppenheim, John Baldessari, George Nicolaidis, and N.E. Thing Co. were displayed. John Perreault's 'Tape Event' (1969) featured masking tape crosses on windows, while John Latham's 'Still and Chew' (1966) presented a chewed Clement Greenberg book. Rafael Ferrer's '¿Qué?' (1969) used axle grease stripes installed by technician Tore Haven. At UBC's Student Union Building Gallery in Vancouver, Bruce Nauman films and Richard Artschwager's 'blp' were shown. The Walker Art Center hosted 'c.7,500' with Mierle Laderman Ukeles' 'Maintenance Art Tasks' and N.E. Thing Co.'s time zone work. Athena Tacha's photographic series documented body positions, and Christine Kozlov's nine books on neurological compilation were displayed. N.E. Thing Co. transmitted imagery via Xerox Telecopier and CNCP Telex at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
