Lucio Fontana's Spatial Environments Reconstructed at Pirelli HangarBicocca
Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan presents nine reconstructed Spatial Environments and two environmental interventions by Lucio Fontana (1899–1968), ephemeral installations the Argentine-born artist typically destroyed after exhibition. The show, curated by Barbara Ferriani, Marina Pugliese, and Vicente Todolí, uses philological research to recreate works from 1948–1968, including pieces originally shown at the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, 1966) and Documenta 4 (Kassel, 1968). Ferriani describes examining correspondence, archival documents, plans, reviews, and historical photos; for the 1967 Stedelijk Museum piece, a fabric fragment donated to Jef Verheyen confirmed the color as cyclamen pink. Artist Nanda Vigo contributed original Quadrionda glass and completed the black environment's neon-lit holes for the 1964 Triennale di Milano works. The environments feature neon, fluorescent paint, Wood's lamps, and soft flooring, challenging spatial perception.
