Lucio Fontana Opens New Sorol Art Museum in South Korea

The Sorol Art Museum, designed by Meier Partners Architects and funded by the Korean Research Institute of Contemporary Art (KoRICA) Foundation, opens in Gangneung City, South Korea, on February 14, 2024. The museum, featuring geometric lines, white walls, and large windows, aims to become an international cultural hub focusing on abstract and contemporary Korean art. Its inaugural exhibition, "Lucio Fontana: Spatial Concept," is the first dedicated to the Italian Spatialism pioneer in South Korea, curated with the Fondazione Lucio Fontana. Silvia Ardemagni, President of the Fondazione and co-curator, expressed enthusiasm for introducing Fontana to a new audience. The exhibition includes Spatial Environments and a selection of works from his post-war period until 1968, accompanied by the first catalog on the artist in South Korea. The museum's architecture, by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Meier, echoes his designs for the Getty Center in Los Angeles and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona. Gangneung, a vibrant city with over ten million annual visitors, is known for its historical landscape and cultural initiatives.
