Lucio Fontana exhibitions at Galleria Borghese and Museo del Novecento

Two concurrent exhibitions in Rome and Milan explore Lucio Fontana's spatial concepts through dialogues with historical collections. At Galleria Borghese in Rome, 'Terra e Oro' (until August 25, 2019) presents 51 works by Fontana alongside Baroque masterpieces, curated by director Anna Coliva. The show juxtaposes Fontana's spatial research with the collection's paintings by Bellini, Titian, Raphael, and others, highlighting his resolution of physical and metaphysical space. At Museo del Novecento in Milan, a separate exhibition curated by Davide Colombo compares Fontana's equestrian drawings from the 1930s with Leonardo da Vinci's studies, marking the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death. The Milan show includes archival materials from the 1939 Leonardesca exhibition and features works like the gilded bronze 'Cavallo rampante' and ceramics. Both exhibitions emphasize Fontana's role as heir to Baroque spatial innovation and his modern reinterpretation of Renaissance motifs.
