Luciana Pretta's Brazilian Landscapes at Galleria Maja in Rome
Brazilian artist Luciana dos Santos, known as Luciana Pretta (Bahia, 1980), presents her second exhibition in a trilogy titled "Quando filo, colore, parola s’intrecciano" curated by Giovanna Dalla Chiesa at Galleria Maja Arte Contemporanea in Rome. Pretta, whose moniker means 'black' in Portuguese, learned natural pigment-making from her grandmother and creates works using recycled materials. Her series "Remiscences – Place of Memory" includes castles and colorful objects made of papier-mâché and cardboard. The exhibition features small naive paintings on linen and jute, as well as large-scale works. Three large raw cotton tapestries titled "Sertao. Sentiero del sole al tramonto" depict the Brazilian Sertão landscape with carmine hues and abstract rolling hills. An installation "Universo particolare" includes a blue tapestry framed by sculptural islands, representing the view of Rio de Janeiro from Corcovado. Pretta cites Edward Hopper's influence and a desire to escape contemporary reality.
