Lucian Freud's New York exhibition reveals existential intensity through paint
Lucian Freud's first major exhibition since his 2002 retrospective opened at Acquavella Contemporary Art in New York, featuring nearly two dozen recent paintings and etchings. The 81-year-old artist's work, characterized by psychological depth and visceral surfaces, includes portraits like "The Brigadier" (2003-04) of Andrew Parker-Bowles, which took over a year to complete. Freud's method involves hundreds of sittings, with his sitters' weariness reportedly energizing his process. His paintings, described as having "exhilarated despair," reject smooth surfaces for hog's hair brush textures that build through layers of correction. The exhibition includes animal portraits like "Skewbald Mare" (2004) and studies of his whippet Pluto, connecting Freud to English naturalist traditions. A companion photography display by David Dawson shows Freud at work and with artists David Hockney and Frank Auerbach. Freud's approach to perspective is improvisational, as seen in "David and Eli" (2003-04) with its mannerist foreshortening. His nudes convey personality through flesh rather than eroticization, achieving what one critic calls "a level of realness that transcends Realism." The show runs through May 27 at 18 E 79 Street in Manhattan.
