Lucía Miranda's 'Las últimas' Reexamines Spain's Colonial Past in the Philippines

exhibition · 2026-05-24

The Centro Dramático Nacional has premiered 'Las últimas', a play by Lucía Miranda that uses farce and political theater to interrogate Spain's colonial relationship with the Philippines. Directed by Miranda, the production stages episodes such as Imelda Marcos attending the wedding of Carmen Franco and Madrid mayor Martínez-Almeida inaugurating a sculpture of 'Los últimos de Filipinas'. The work challenges the heroic narrative of the last Spanish soldiers who continued fighting after Spain had surrendered, exposing the eurocentrist foundations of Spanish memory. The play runs at the Teatro Valle-Inclán in Madrid.
