Lucia Cantò: Sculpture as Co-participation with the World
Lucia Cantò (Pescara, 1995) is an Italian artist working primarily in sculpture, installation, and photography, using everyday objects and materials. She was selected for the first edition of WONDERFUL! Art Research Program, a residency at Museo Novecento in Florence. Recent exhibitions include '36°' at Galleria Monitor, Rome (2024), 'Panorama' in L'Aquila (2023), and 'Stelle che sorreggono altre stelle' at Fondazione Elpis, Milan (2023). In an interview with Davide Dal Sasso, Cantò discusses her poetics: she views sculpture as a form of co-participation with the world, emphasizing material corporeality, daily life, and human relationships. She describes her work as a response to 'friction' with the world, a process from 'wound to miracle' (using the German word 'wunder'). She sees form as a breaking point, where both artist and work break, allowing continuation. Cantò references Lea Vergine's concept of 'maceranze dell'anima' (macerations of the soul) to describe latent information in materials. She acknowledges embarrassment and reticence in showing work, but insists on following a process that is inherently fallible.
