Lucia Cantò's Dualities: Hydraulic Cranes and Clay Vases at Monitor Roma

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Italian artist Lucia Cantò (b. 1995, Pescara) presented her solo exhibition at Monitor gallery in Rome, featuring two near-symmetrical rooms that explore tensions within her poetics. One room displayed a choreography of hydraulic cranes paired in dance-like, almost erotic postures, while the other showcased clay casts of garden vases, each topped with a matching vessel to form silent sculptural populations. Aluminum bougainvillea flowers were scattered on the corridor floor. Cantò's practice consistently employs paired elements, alternating warm materials like clay with industrial ones, and using casting. She describes her work as investigating relationships between pairs, driven by an obsessive dedication. The exhibition reflects her interest in proximity and correspondence, with the cranes embodying a mathematical 'ratio' of equal energy exchange, and the vases creating spaces of welcome. Cantò also co-runs an artist collective in Pescara and recently curated 'The Blind Leading the Blind' at Monitor's Pereto venue, drawing on readings of Louise Bourgeois, Simone Weil, and Chiara Zamboni. She views her sculptural use of concrete materials as a way to structure intangible emotions.
