Luci d'Artista 2016 Opens in Turin with Participatory Mosaic Project

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The 2016 edition of Luci d'Artista in Turin launched with #MosaicoTorino, a video-photographic installation projected on the exterior wall of the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo. Commissioned by the Associazione 4K and created by the Turin-based collective Dead Photo Working, the site-specific work will run until January 15, 2017. It depicts the city through animated images and incorporates photographs posted by users on Instagram with the hashtag #MosaicoTorino, forming an interactive skyline. Foundation President Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo recalled that the project began in 1997 with the City of Turin and is now envied worldwide, marking the start of the city's major contemporary art month. Curator Alessandro Ottenga described #MosaicoTorino as a highly social operation that engages multiple subjects, born from reflections on Turin ten years after the Winter Olympics. The project explores three key themes: the city of Turin, the universal language of images, and public art as participation. The collective aimed to involve the community through photography, addressing the concept of identity in a city open to differences yet with a strong identity—represented by the fixed skyline image while differences flow in a continuous live stream. The work will capture daily, social, and cultural changes in Turin until January 15, 2017.
