Lucas Lecacheur's Surreal Surfboards Redefine Design at Melbourne Design Week

exhibition · 2026-05-16

French designer and former rock musician Lucas Lecacheur is presenting his surreal, functional surfboards at Melbourne Design Week, running until 24 May. Based at At The Above gallery on Fitzroy's Gertrude Street, Lecacheur's six-week residency features new boards including Château Rouge, a 10-foot board with a cowboy boot nose and forked tail, and a board dragged behind a ute in the Australian bush to embed local debris. His designs, such as the Brutalist and Medusa, are fully functional and have been tested by the artist. Lecacheur also showcases experimental fins like Total Mayhem and Bat Fin no.6, plus his White Fin Project photography series. Raised on Île de Ré, he now splits his time between Japan and the US, with his Guillotine board held in a Tokyo gallery. The exhibition includes drawings and dozens of fin prototypes.
