Lucamaleonte's mural of Gigi Proietti in Rome's Tufello neighborhood

Street artist Lucamaleonte has completed a mural of the late actor Gigi Proietti on the facade of an ATER building at Via Tonale 6 in Rome's Tufello district, where Proietti spent his childhood. The artwork, titled "D'après Gigi," depicts Proietti smiling with his characteristic sardonic expression, wearing a hat and a shirt with yellow and red details—the colors of his favorite soccer team, AS Roma. The project was promoted by Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, curated by its artistic director Marcello Smarrelli, and realized in collaboration with Regione Lazio, ATER, AS Roma, and Fondazione Roma Cares. The initiative originated from Proietti's former neighbors, who requested ATER's general director Andrea Napoletano to make it possible, transforming their neighborhood into an open-air museum. Smarrelli noted that street art is a powerful tool for promoting contemporary culture through its immediate language, and that such public art interventions require dialogue among artists, citizens, institutions, and public/private sponsors. This mural follows a portrait of Proietti by Maupal (Mauro Pallotta) on the shutter of the Teatro Brancaccio building. Proietti died on November 2, 2020, on his 80th birthday.
