Lucamaleonte mural for Rome's Mercato Testaccio Christmas relaunch

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

Street artist Lucamaleonte has created a new mural for the entrance of Mercato Testaccio in Rome, inaugurated on December 9, 2021. The work, inspired by the nearby Monte dei Cocci (a hill formed from ancient amphora shards), depicts an amphora composed of six fragments, each reflecting the words of local shopkeepers about their vision for the future. The mural is part of the ReStart project by ACNE, the creative collective of the Deloitte family, aimed at supporting emerging artists and small businesses affected by the pandemic. Andrea Laurenza, head of ACNE Italy, stated the initiative unites creativity, culture, and design to sustainably revitalize the Testaccio district. Each market stall will receive a limited-edition print of its mural section, offered free to the first customers from December 16 to 21, 2021, encouraging the public to shop locally and reconstruct the full artwork. Lucamaleonte had previously painted a mural titled 'Ave Cesare' at the same market to celebrate the film 'Planet of the Apes.' The Mercato Testaccio, a historic neighborhood market, has ancient roots with archaeological evidence of food storage warehouses dating back to antiquity.
