Luca Vitone Sails from Elba to St. Helena in 'Pro Tempore' Voyage

artist · 2026-04-28

On April 29, Luca Vitone, an Italian artist from Genoa born in 1964, will embark on a journey from Elba, where Napoleon Bonaparte was first exiled, to St. Helena, his last place of exile. This two-month trip will take him to places like the Balearic Islands, Algeciras, the Canary Islands, and Cape Verde. Named 'Pro Tempore,' which means temporary duties in Latin, the project explores themes of modern authority through Napoleon's influence and the sea, symbolizing both power and uncertainty. Funded by the 14th edition of the Italian Council, the expedition will result in a digital film for global cinema release. New artworks will debut at Sonnenstube and De Pietri Artphilein Foundation in November 2026, with the project joining Museo Madre's permanent collection in Naples by spring 2027, alongside screenings at Weserburg Museum für moderne Kunst and MAC USP.
