Luca Vitone's Atlantic Crossing Diary: From Cape Verde Toward Saint Helena
Italian artist Luca Vitone is documenting his sailing voyage from Italy to Saint Helena, where Napoleon was exiled, as part of his project 'Pro Tempore'. In this latest log entry, he reports being at sea for 43 days, having departed from Praia, Cape Verde, and now heading toward the equatorial zone. The crew includes commander Morelli, narrator Bertozzi, sound engineer Daniele (Alessandro), and cinematographer Elvio Manuzzi, representing Enece for the film production. The journey began on April 23 from the shipyard in Carrara Marittima, with stops at Elba, the Balearics (Mahon, Minorca), La Linea de la Concepción near Gibraltar, the Canaries (Lanzarote and Tenerife), and Cape Verde (Mindelo and Praia). At Tenerife, they met artist Giovanni Ozzola, who lives there, and attended a social evening aboard the sailing ship Vespucci with Italian physicists and the Italian consul Gianluca Cappelli Bigazzi. The crew has been filming landscapes at each stop to integrate into the film. They have faced technical issues with the fuel tank, causing diesel fumes, and have been unable to catch fresh fish despite trying various lures, though they have encountered dolphins, turtles, a sunfish, and flying fish, some of which landed on deck. The next leg is the longest without land, at least two weeks across the Atlantic to Saint Helena.
