Luca Ricci's new novel 'Gioco di prestigio' explores failure and redemption in Rome

publication · 2026-05-10

Italian writer Luca Ricci returns with a new novel 'Gioco di prestigio' (published by La nave di Teseo), following his seasons quadrilogy and 'Gotico Rosa'. The story follows a man who has given up everything and wanders near Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, torn between the bottle and poetry. His isolation is broken by a woman who believes begging can defeat sadness and capitalism. The novel alternates between Rome (present) and Pisa (past). Ricci describes it as a choral novel that becomes a monologue from the eighth line, emphasizing brevity and precision. The book will be presented on Monday, May 11 at 6 PM in the Sala Ferri of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, as part of the Vieusseux cultural meetings, with the author in conversation with Alessandro Raveggi. The interview was conducted by Ginevra Barbetti.
