Luca Lupi's Lockdown Photography at Cardelli&Fontana

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Photographer Luca Lupi (Pontedera, 1970) returns to Cardelli & Fontana gallery in Sarzana for his third solo exhibition, curated by Ilaria Mariotti. The show presents a new series of works created during the 2020 lockdowns, when isolation and restrictions were still a disturbing novelty. Unable to photograph landscapes as he was used to, Lupi translated his creative drive through new tools, starting from simple, domestic, nearby objects. The artist experimented with exposing colored paper sheets to sunlight for varying durations, then switched to high-intensity lamps for faster reactions on pigments. Like photography, he controls distance, position, exposure, and image shape through masking. Greens, browns, reds, and blues evoke the skies he once photographed. Behind the forms, transparencies, and soft gradations lies the slow process and silent waiting. Light, time, and matter give birth to these images, which recount the lost landscape Lupi managed to rediscover. The exhibition is also viewable online in the gallery's view room.
