Luca Gilli's 'Plenum' Exhibition at Villa Lysis, Capri
A site-specific exhibition titled 'Plenum' by Luca Gilli (born 1965 in Reggio Emilia) is on view at Villa Lysis, a Liberty-style villa built in 1905 on Capri. Curated by Marina Guida, the show presents twenty color photographs exploring Gilli's personal interpretation of the void theory developed by Aristotle and Descartes. The term 'Plenum' refers to a void composed of imperceptible particles that fill its apparent lack of matter—a fullness invisible to the eye. According to the curator, Gilli's photographic approach transforms everyday places, objects, and spaces into timeless visual scores, erasing superficial visual habits. It reverses the hierarchical relationship between figure and ground, granting primacy to emptiness within the image. The objects captured appear to float in a dreamlike, shadowless light, aligning with the architecture and nuances of Villa Lysis. The exhibition aims to highlight relationships between parts, offering viewers a distraction-free understanding of the photographic project. Installation views by Raffaelle Mastroianni accompany the show.
