Luca Coclite's 'Superflora' at Nowhere Gallery, Milan
Luca Coclite's exhibition 'Superflora, principi di botanica senza radici' at Nowhere Gallery in Milan runs until November 18, 2016. Curated by Laura Perrone, the show transforms the gallery's white cube into a hypertextual ensemble of drawings, photographs, maps, sculptures, objects, and artist books. Coclite, born in Gagliano del Capo in 1981, explores themes from geology, botany, sociology, radio communications, and artistic and environmental avant-gardes. The term Anthropocene, coined by biologist Eugene Stoermer in the 1980s, underpins the exhibition's critique of natural versus artificial. Electronic devices mimic tall trees, and a green map of Italy's heel is actually a deceptive cartography of telephone signal coverage in Puglia. The work employs visual tricks reminiscent of Moira Ricci's mockumentary photography, prompting reflection on contemporary transformations in geo- and historical terms.
