Luca Beatrice Appointed President of Rome's Quadriennale Foundation
The Italian Ministry has appointed curator, lecturer, and journalist Luca Beatrice as the new President of the Fondazione Quadriennale di Roma, succeeding Umberto Croppi. Beatrice, former president of the Circolo dei Lettori di Torino, will lead the institution toward its next exhibition in 2025. The board also includes Katia Gruppioni and Giancarlo Abete. The Quadriennale faces the challenge of utilizing the former Arsenale Clementino Pontificio di Ripa Grande, a large venue used as a storage depot since a 2018 agreement between former Minister Franceschini and Franco Bernabè. Beatrice aims to focus on Italian art, reassessing the state of the art scene 25 years after 2000, and prioritizes networking with Roman institutions like MAXXI and the Galleria Nazionale. He questions the internationalization strategy of the past decade, emphasizing the Quadriennale's mission to spotlight Italian art, contrasting with the Venice Biennale's global focus. Beatrice plans to form a curatorial team rather than appoint a single artistic director, deeming the role superfluous. He acknowledges the work of outgoing artistic director Gian Maria Tosatti as useful but niche, and expresses curiosity about Adriano Pedrosa's upcoming Biennale despite ideological disagreements.
